Alright San Miguel, León, and Guanajuato capital folks, get ready for some big news on the retail front!
The international home improvement giant, The Home Depot, just announced a major investment in our state of Guanajuato – a whopping $61.3 million US dollars, which is roughly 1.244 billion pesos! This big chunk of change is going towards opening three brand-spankin’ new stores right here in San Miguel de Allende, León, and Guanajuato capital. That’s some serious commitment!
And get this – this expansion is expected to create at least 300 direct jobs, plus a whole bunch of indirect jobs and a boost for our local suppliers. Sounds like a win-win for the Guanajuato economy!
The announcement was made at a fancy event led by our state governor, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo. She pointed out that even with all the crazy stuff happening in the global economy, these new investments show that Guanajuato is a reliable and attractive place for businesses to grow.

Governor Libia Denisse even stated, “Today we see that in Guanajuato we have managed to build a favorable climate for investments. We have labor peace, stability, legality, and clear rules, and that is what gives companies the confidence to continue growing here.” That’s what we like to hear!
Out of that $61 million-plus investment, a cool $21.3 million is headed our way to San Miguel de Allende, with $19 million going to León and $21 million for the Guanajuato capital store. With this move, The Home Depot is doubling its presence in our state and bringing their total investment in Guanajuato to over 2 billion pesos! That’s a lot of pesos!
During the event, José Rodríguez Garza, the president and CEO of The Home Depot Mexico, mentioned that they’ve been doing business in our country for over 23 years, and they like to prioritize hiring national suppliers. In fact, a solid 85% of their products come from Mexican suppliers, many of whom are right here in Guanajuato, in sectors like ceramics and construction materials. Talk about keeping it local!

Rodríguez Garza also highlighted that the Mexican market is steadily growing and that they see Guanajuato as a key spot for their national expansion plan, which involves a total investment of $1.3 billion US dollars across the whole country. That’s some serious growth!
Our very own Mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, chimed in, stressing how important it is that the new store respects the unique vibe and special conditions of our World Heritage city. He assured everyone that the local government will help facilitate the investment but will also be careful to protect our beautiful surroundings.
Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco emphasized, “San Miguel de Allende must progress, but not through senseless modernization, but through conservation. We will work with Home Depot to ensure that the image of the store integrates harmoniously with our city.” Sounds like a good plan!
He even suggested that The Home Depot consider including a space in their store to sell local crafts and prioritize hiring young folks, women, and seniors as a way to promote social and economic inclusion. We’re all for that!
This project isn’t just good news for those who land a direct job; it’s expected to boost the entire economic chain – from the suppliers of materials to the construction sector, which, according to the Governor, directly impacts 73 branches of the national economy. That’s a big ripple effect!
With this expansion, The Home Depot will have a total of eight stores in Guanajuato, really solidifying their commitment to the economic and social development of our state. Officials agreed that these kinds of investments make our region more competitive and position Guanajuato as one of the top-performing economies in the whole country.
So, get ready, San Miguel, León, and Guanajuato capital! It looks like we’ll soon have some new options for all our home improvement needs, and it’s bringing jobs and economic growth with it. Stay tuned for more local updates!
