Indigenous Communities in San Miguel Unite to Register and Celebrate Their Roots!

Hey there, San Miguel! We’ve got some good news brewing that’s sparking excitement in our beautiful town. Indigenous communities around San Miguel de Allende have officially opened an office in Cruz del Palmar, ready to roll out the welcome mat for anyone looking to get in on the action and register in the Padrón de Pueblos Originarios – that’s the registry for indigenous communities in the region.

Now, you might be wondering why this is such a big deal. Well, the folks from the Hermandad de Hña Hñu Chichimeca al Rescate de la Cultura de los Pueblos Originarios have been hard at work on this project, and they’re saying that the existing roster of 27 communities just doesn’t cut it. Many other neighborhoods, especially those in the charming urban areas like Guadiana, Ojo de Agua, and Valle del Maíz, have roots that run deep into our indigenous heritage.

Salvador Noria, a community liaison from the organization, pointed out that some historic areas, like San Miguel Viejo, haven’t even made the list, despite their relevance in our city’s history. He made a strong case that they need more recognition and representation, especially since there’s been a noticeable gap in communication and support coming from the government.

And let’s be honest: waiting on the government isn’t always the best approach. That’s why our local indigenous leaders decided to take matters into their own hands. The new office is here to provide guidance and support to residents who think their communities deserve a spot on the list. Plus, this initiative comes with a cherry on top: they’re also pushing for a local delegation of the INPI (Instituto Nacional de Pueblos Indígenas) right here in Guanajuato to make things easier for everyone involved.

What’s on the agenda? Well, they’re currently in the process of registering five local communities: San Miguel Tres Cruces, Marroquín de Abajo, San Miguel Viejo, Cinco Señores, and Corralejo de Abajo. That’s a whole lot of pride in the works!

So, here we are, witnessing a community unite under the common goal of embracing their cultural heritage and pushing for their rights. It’s been said before but it bears repeating: we’re all in this together, sharing the same rich tapestry of culture that stems from our Chichimeca and Otomí roots.

To wrap things up, it’s heartwarming to see this initiative taking off and leading to greater visibility and recognition for our indigenous communities. Let’s tip our hats to those involved! How about you? Have thoughts or experiences to share on the topic? Feel free to drop a comment! Until next time, amigo! Keep your spirit alive and stay connected.

Don’t forget to check if you’re in need of any help with your community’s registration; the new office is there to assist with those tricky processes. Catch ya later, San Miguel!
