The state Congress is considering a request that would require the San Miguel de Allende government to hand over a detailed report. This report would need to list all the housing developments, commercial projects, and businesses in our municipality that have their own wastewater treatment plants, as well as those that don’t. The Urban Development committee is currently looking into this.

The idea is to formally ask our Mayor, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, to direct the Department of Urban Development and Territorial Planning, along with our local water and sewage authority, SAPASMA, to put together this comprehensive report for the state Congress.
This report would need to clearly state which developments and businesses have wastewater treatment plants and, just as importantly, which ones don’t. For those without this infrastructure, especially when local regulations say they should have it, the report would also need to explain why they aren’t in compliance.
This whole thing stems from a request made during a plenary session. The concern is to find out just how many housing developments are actually following environmental rules by having their own treatment plants. There’s a growing belief that the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Allende Dam is a major reason behind the pesky water hyacinth problem we’ve been seeing.

The committee has received this request and will now analyze it to decide whether to issue a favorable or unfavorable opinion. We could see their decision within the next couple of weeks.
So, what does this mean for San Miguel? It could mean more transparency about how our town is managing its wastewater and whether everyone is doing their part to protect our environment, especially the Allende Dam. It’ll be interesting to see what the Congress decides and what information San Miguel might have to reveal. Stay tuned for updates! 💧🧐
