Hello! San Miguel Hope you’re all enjoying that beautiful weather. I’ve got some juicy news for you today about a situation that’s been brewing in our neck of the woods.
So, it turns out that an environmental organization named El Charco del Ingenio is raising a bit of a ruckus over some state government construction in a protected ecological zone right here in San Miguel de Allende. They’re not happy about the three-story educational building that’s going up in the Landeta Park area, which is supposed to be a zone for conservation—not some new concrete jungle.
César Arias, the president of El Charco del Ingenio, informed us that they’ve been waiting for a year to hear back from local authorities regarding their request to get back control of the core area of this protected space—an area known for its almost 30 hectares of lush greenery. He’s pretty frustrated since the park has suffered a bit over the years with various urban developments encroaching on what should be untouched land.
And get this, back in 2009, they were approached to give up some of this space for a UNAM project on climate change—one that never materialized. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster of bad decisions and neglect, and now they see the fate of the park hanging in the balance. The current educational building now being expanded isn’t even focused on the environmental issues that plague us; instead, it’s lined up as a training ground for tourism and gastronomy—because, sure, that’s what we need when water crises are knocking on our doors.
The organization has filed a complaint with the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office due to the environmental impact this construction is having on the area. They’re concerned about the visual mess of a gigantic white building that looks like a shoebox, and the second building—which is even closer to the park—only exacerbates the problem. César says the construction is disturbing local wildlife and setting a nasty precedent for more construction in the future.
He also mentioned that they want to make sure the park serves the community and provide space for everyone to enjoy. They’d previously received a promise from the municipal government to return control of the area, but as it stands, they’ve been given the runaround for a year. Sounds a bit bureaucratic, doesn’t it?
So there you have it, folks—a community group standing up for our natural spaces while battling red tape. Let’s hope they get the attention they deserve and maybe, just maybe, we can turn this park into the sanctuary it was meant to be.
That’s all for now, folks. Keep an eye out for more developments on this—that park is one of our local treasures! Feel free to share your thoughts below. See you around!
