Hey, folks! We’ve got an interesting—and concerning—tale coming out of San Miguel de Allende this week.
It seems our beloved Cerro de Los Picachos is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Local environmentalists have raised the alarm over groups of illegal hunters invading the area, and they’re not exactly playing nice. Reports tell us that these folks are out there shooting anything that moves, including deer and bobcats. It’s a bit like an uninvited wild west shootout, and, let’s be honest, that’s not the type of adventure we want for our peaceful nature lovers.
César Arias, the president of the Charco del Ingenio patronage, shared some chilling details. He noted that these hunters are slipping in from nearby towns like Comonfort and Apaseo, but now they’ve started venturing in from Guadalupe de la Canal right here in San Miguel. Suffice to say, it’s making a weekend jaunt into the wilderness rather dicey.
Arias went on to say, “It’s extremely dangerous because this is a place where people go to hike and camp, and these guys are blasting away.” Clearly, this isn’t the kind of ‘shooting’ we want in our beautiful open spaces. Plus, these hunters are wreaking havoc on the scenery—kicking down fences and leaving destruction in their wake. Not cool, folks.
Concerned landowners are teaming up to try to keep these hunters out and have even called in the National Guard to patrol the area. Sounds like they’re ready to take a stand against what Arias describes as “truly criminal and extremely dangerous” behavior.
And here’s a thought, why not work towards protecting this whole area officially? Spotting endangered species and keeping our waters nice and clean is something that can’t hurt to prioritize! After all, who wants a nature reserve that also doubles as a shooting range?
So, if you’re planning to head out for some nature therapy at Los Picachos, keep your eyes peeled, folks. The wilderness should be a peaceful escape, not a battleground. Let’s hope things settle down soon so we can keep enjoying the beautiful landscapes we love.
As always, let’s stick together—feel free to share your thoughts about this issue. See you out there! Stay cool, San Miguel!
